The Department of Animal- and Aquacultural Sciences (IHA), Faculty of Biosciences, at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) is inviting applications for a 3-

year postdoctoral fellow position (with possibility for extension for up to an additional 1 year max 4 years total) using gene editing (CRISPR-

Cas9) to address specific biological questions in model fish species.

The successful candidate will join CIGENE, a multidisciplinary genome biology research group possessing expertise in genetics, evolutionary and comparative genomics, bioinformatics and systems biology.

Located within the Department of Animal- and Aquacultural Sciences, this group includes 2 full-time professors, 1 associate professor, 11 researchers, 8 PhD students and 9 research technicians.

CIGENE (www.cigene.no) has a strong aqua- and agri- research profile, with key strengths in the application of omics’ data to understand the genetic architecture of complex traits.

The group wishes to use functional genomics technologies, including gene editing, to better understand the biology underlying specific genotype-

phenotype associations. CIGENE has excellent wet and dry lab facilities for automated high-throughput omics, and bioinformatics.

The Department of Animal and Aquacultural Sciences provides fundamental, innovative research and practical solutions to improve productivity and sustainability across the agriculture and aquaculture sector.

Currently, disciplines within the department include Animal Nutrition and Feed Technology, Ethology and Animal Environment, Breeding and Quantitative Genetics, and Genome Biology.

The main objective of the Faculty of Biosciences is to contribute to the development of sustainable agriculture and food production systems through basic and applied research on plants and animals including fish (aquaculture).

The faculty houses Centre for Integrative Genetics (CIGENE) and the research center for Research-based Innovation (SFI) Foods of Norway.

The faculty is responsible for bachelor- and master programmes in Biology, Animal Science and Plant Science, and international master programmes in Agroecology, Plant Science, Aquaculture, Animal Breeding Genetics and Feed Manufacturing Technology.

PhD programmes include Animal Science and Aquaculture, and Plant Sciences. There are currently 480 bachelor and master students, and 90 PhD students, enrolled in these programmes.

The faculty has approximately 220 permanent and temporary scientific employees, including technicians, and 18 administrative positions.

Research project

The successful candidate will work within the research project Gene Editing to Innovate Norwegian Breeding Industries (GENEinnovate) (https : / / cigene.

no / category / projects / ), recently funded by the BIONÆR program in the Research Council of Norway.

Main tasks

The GENEinnovate project seeks to lay the technical foundations for applied gene-editing by exploring industry challenges in a laboratory setting.

Initially we will use it as a tool to test specific hypothesized genotype-phenotype associations in biological material (cells / embryos) from commercial fish, pig, cattle and plant populations.

The successful applicant will work in a newly established team (including researchers, postdoctoral fellows and students) charged with the task of developing the lab and establishing robust protocols including (but not limited to) (i) gRNA design, (ii) developing and maintaining relevant cell lines, (iii) optimizing transfection, (iv) validating construct delivery and function etc.

During the period of employment we anticipate a growing need to develop high-throughput approaches for developing constructs, screening transformants and functional testing and anticipate that the candidate will spearhead this activity.

Qualifications and competence

Required Academic qualifications :

  • PhD-degree in functional genomics, molecular biology, cell biology, or similar
  • Recent practical lab experience focusing on cell culture and cell biology techniques, and molecular biology
  • Excellent communication skills both to the scientific community and to a broader audience.
  • Desired Academic qualifications :

  • Broad, practical experience with CRISPR-Cas9 or other gene editing approaches.
  • Proven ability to develop / optimize / adapt lab protocols, and to record and disseminate these to others.
  • Experience isolating cells and establishing cell lines from fish and domestic animals.
  • Experience with analyses of genomics / transcriptomics / epigenomics data
  • Relevant statistical and programing skills.
  • Personal skills

  • Understand the goal of the work and able to orient the time and energy on the most critical questions without the compromising the attention to details
  • Able to work co-operatively with others; desire to be a part of a team and contribute to organizational and team goals, effective communication with team members.
  • Enthusiastic, highly structured and organized, able to multi-task.

  • Analytical and academic approach to research questions
  • Good collaborative and social skills
  • Applicants must be proficient in English, both written and spoken. Proficiency in Norwegian is not required but is advantageous

    The position is placed in government pay scale position code 1352; postdoctoral fellow, wage framework 24, salary grade57 -

    77 (NOK 490.900-722.400) on the Norwegian Government salary scale upon employment depending on qualifications. The position follow ordinary meriting regulations.
