About the position
The University of Agder (UiA) invites applications for a three-year, full-time, fixed-term appointment as Post-doctoral Research Fellow in coastal ecology at the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Natural Sciences.
The successful candidate must be prepared to split his / her working hours between Campus Kristiansand and the facilities of Akvalab Sør in Lister.
Starting date is flexible but preferably no later than 15 October 2020.
The marine group at the Department of Natural Sciences comprises around 20 people including professors, professors II, researchers II, Postdocs, and PhD fellows.
The successful candidate will also benefit from collaboration within the Centre for Coastal Research (CCR) which includes GRID-Arendal, NIVA, the University of Oslo, and the Institute of Marine Research.
CCR is currently a Priority Research Centre at UiA.
The position is connected to the Innakva project, which is funded by the Sørlandet Knowledge Foundation and aims to facilitate collaboration between research, innovation and the blue industry of the region.
We are looking for a highly motivated Post-doctoral Research Fellow interested in phytoplankton dynamics and the development of new tools in optics and / or genetics as well as the use of microscopy to study protist bloom dynamics focusing on HAB species.
The successful candidate will work with researchers and the regional blue industry to develop an early-warning system for developing harmful algae blooms (HABs) and will work with developing new tools to identify potential harmful algal blooms at an early stage.
The candidate will work to strengthen the relationship between UiA and the marine sector and enhance our shared R&D capacity.
The successful candidate should hold a PhD degree (at the starting date) in a relevant field. Some experience with morphological identification of micro-or mesoplankton is a prerequisite for the position.
Proficiency in oral and written English is required.

Skills and experience within phytoplankton diversity, microscopy, and the use of molecular tools are an advantage. Relevant practical experience from marine fieldwork will be emphasized along with personal suitability and good teamwork skills.
The Post-doctoral Research Fellow will be expected to take part in a binding cooperation with the research group and contribute to an active research environment that will give opportunities for personal and professional development.
The appointee must have the ability to work in a goal-oriented, organized, focused, and independently way.
During the assessment process emphasize will be placed on the applicant's previous work, MSc and PhD thesis, as well as any other previous research and development work.
The position is remunerated according to the State Salary Scale, salary plan 17.510, code 1352, NOK 532 300 - 583 900 gross salary per year.
Higher salary grades may be considered for particularly well-qualified applicants. A compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.
