About the position
The University of Stavanger is looking for an Associate Professor in Energy Technologies
The expanding need for sustainable energy, as well as the environmental concerns of conventional energy generation and utilization technologies at a global level require significant innovation and highly qualified personnel in energy systems engineering.
This is creating a worldwide demand for educational training at both undergraduate and graduate levels in areas related to the energy industry, and more specifically in energy systems.
Development of more sustainable technologies requires research and innovation to achieve energy production and utilization that is financially viable, readily available and environmentally benign.
It addresses the complexity and required expertise in several technical disciplines by the industry.

The position is organisationally affiliated to the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Energy and Petroleum Engineering (IEP).
The Energy group at IEP is a very active group and is well recognized nationally and internationally with several internationally funded projects and a strong international network.
The Energy group is also lead of a local initiative, "program are for geothermal energy", aiming at taking advantage of the synergies between the competence pool in energy system modeling and analysis on one hand and the strong petroleum competence, especially drilling and well construction on the other hand.
Currently the energy group consists of a full professor, an associate professor, 3 PostDocs and 7 PhD students.
The Energy Group is aiming at developing transformative and innovative solutions to the energy demand and environmental problems by taking a systems approach to achieve high efficiency and low environmental impacts.
The primary aim of this position is to strengthen the energy research and education at IEP, with special focus on external funding for research projects from available national and European research funding schemes.
We are seeking an Associate Professor with a PhD or equivalent qualification in Energy Systems Engineering, or similar in the area of Energy Technology.
We are particularly interested in receiving applications from strong candidates who are in early stages of their career with a proven research record in the multidisciplinary areas of Low Emissions Energy Conversion and Production Systems, Energy Systems Integration and Performance Analysis, Hydrogen Production and Utilization, Gas Turbine-based Systems Studies, Carbon Capture and Utilization Technologies, Energy System Modeling, Energy Efficiency Improvement Techniques and Energy Economics.
As the core research and education areas at the Department are Energy Technology, Drilling, Well Construction and Production, candidates with additional specialization than those listed above such as energy generation and utilization aspects of deep and shallow geothermal energy resources that can play as a bridging role between the Energy Group and other Research Groups of the Department will be evaluated positively.
Relevant knowledge and experience within the field of energy and environment and corresponding global challenges such as climate change issue will be also evaluated positively.
Emphasis will be given to the applicants? proven ability to contribute to the development of external sources of funding in the Energy Research group.
The candidates are strongly encouraged to present their research-based project management / coordination, collaboration and networking skills and their proven experience from performing internationally / nationally funded projects (through schemes such as EU FP7 or Horizon 2020 and programs of Research Council of Norway).
Further emphasis will be given to the applicants, who has implemented theoretical and practical aspect of Energy Systems Engineering with industry partners or has industrial experience relevant for the projects and the research activities at the Department.
Experience from national and international advisory board or scientific evaluation committees of research and development projects is also considered positively.
You must be able to document pedagogical and didactic skills relating to higher education, and basic skills in planning, evaluation and development of teaching and supervision.
If you do not meet the competence requirement you must complete a university pedagogy course within a period of two years of the appointment start date.
The course will be provided by the university.
The working and teaching languages are Norwegian and English. If you do not have a good command of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language, you must acquire Norwegian language skills equivalent to level B2 within a period of three years from the appointment start date.
If required, you will be offered a Norwegian course paid for by the university.
In the absence of applicants with sufficient scientific expertise, the university may consider temporarily designating an appointee for up to three years, during which time he / she will endeavour to gain the qualifications necessary for a permanent position.
The applicant must be capable of gaining the necessary qualifications during the period of employment.

Your application will be assessed by an expert committee. In the expert assessment, emphasis will be placed on submitted scientific works and documented teaching competence.
The committe will also assess your experience with popularisation / dissemination activities, university politics and administration, and any other documented qualifications relevant to the position.
If you do not satisfy key parts of the qualification requirements, you may have your application rejected before applications are submitted to the expert committee for assessment.
Based on the expert committee's statement, relevant applicants will be invited to an interview and a teaching demonstration before any recommendations are made.

It is a prerequisite that the appointee has a residence which enables him or her to be present at / available to the academic community during ordinary working hours.
