One PhD candidate position (3 years or 4 years if teaching at the department is to be included) is available at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Architecture and Technology, in the Energy and Environment group.

Anticipated commencement for the position : 1st of September 2018, in agreement with the Department.

Information about the Department and Group

The Department of Architecture and Technology has 65 employees, and is organised in four research and teaching groups : Building Materials and Constructions, Building conservation and Transformation, Form, and Energy and Environment.

Currently, the Energy and Environment group consists of 20 scientific staff. Research activities within the group range from building physics to building energy use and energy efficiency, indoor environment, integrated energy design, solar energy in architecture, lighting and daylighting, environmental performance of buildings to low emission refurbishment of built environment.

The group has been strongly involved in the Norwegian FME Research Centre on Zero Emission Buildings (ZEB) (http : / / www.

zeb.no), now is involved in the Zero Emission Neighbourhoods (ZEN) (http : / / www.ntnu.no / zen) and is also involved in the Norwegian FME Sustainable Solar Technology http : / / susoltech.

no / . In addition participates in various national and international projects, e.g. IEA Tasks or EBC Annexes as well as international lighting and colour associations i.

e. CIE and AIC. The group has also tight collaboration with SINTEF Building and Infrastructure. The group has well equipped Daylight laboratory and access to SINTEF laboratories.

Research project description

The research project is funded by the Norwegian Research Centre for Sustainable Solar Cell Technology http : / / susoltech.

no / , which have been officially open in Mai 2017.

The title "Building Integrated Photovoltaics" is tentative and may become more specific during the process.

The aim of the project is to develop (or redevelop) and examine ideas and methods for building integration of one of the most promising green technologies, that is photovoltaic technology.

  • Up to now, the PVs have been located mostly on roofs of existing buildings, but the total building roof area in modern towns is not sufficient and not always available;
  • facades have to be utilized as well. On the other side, the integration of PVs in urban context is challenging. The typical for traditional PVs glossy and dark-

blue or black colour appears often as intrusive and hostile, the geometric format of many photovoltaic modules is difficult to apply on existing buildings, etc

There is a need to find better solutions for smooth and harmonic building integration of PV-products, especially the ones developed in the frame of the FME SUSOLTECH.

The project is to be carried out in collaboration with Glass and Façade and other partners of SUSOLTECH. In addition to this, different forms of collaborations with international universities and research centres are planned, hopefully through one of the IEA Tasks.

    Work description

The PhD-study implies advanced studies in the field of visual perception and architectural / urban design as well as photometry and lighting technology.

The research activities will be carried out first in the Daylighting lab at NTNU where colour, gloss, translucency and texture of collected solar cell samples has to be technically measured and visually examined.

Especially the luminance and colour contrasts have to be carefully estimated for different settings and observation conditions

Architectural consideration and successive design approximation will be done after the lab studies heading at developing of a general design guidelines for BIPV for practicing architects and engineers.

It will be done by testing of a series of previously prepared alternatives and analysing the results.

A smaller number of especially successive products and / or building integration ideas will be hopefully tested in full-

    scale in the urban context.

The successful applicant will spend a part of the time with industrial partners and will have the possibility to spend a part of his time at a foreign research institution.

    Qualifications

A highly motivated candidate with a high-grade (minimum character B) Master's degree (or equivalent) within architectural design or related fields (see details below) is encouraged to apply.

    Required

Excellent communication skills, especially with project partners / industry

Good ability to work in a team

Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English

Ability to work independently and to take initiatives

    Desired

Experience with laboratory and / or experimental activities.

    Previous research activities.

Ability to guide Master students in relevant topics.

Fluent Scandinavian (written and spoken language) is an advantage in relation to teaching activities / faculty duties
